ABOUT A RE[A]SIDENCY

ARE[A]SIDENCY supports and celebrates experimentations and innovation. It aims at participating in the invention of our common, European digital horizon, by promoting research, creation and knowledge dissemination through several countries and scenes

a re[a]sidency program

CURATE

A Re[a]sidency invites European emerging talents to respond to an open call and get involved with the 3 main partners and our European network of associated partners. They will benefit from intermediation and effective encounters with actors from the academic, artistic, entrepreneurial and technical fields

dialogue

to create

Residents will meet and exchange with specialized audiences (B2B) throughout their residency, thus being counselled and gaining access to cultural, entrepreneurial and industrial platforms and networks

ACCELARATE

The selected participants will get the opportunity to develop their research and produce their work, thanks to the active support of the partners through every phase, from creation to production and promotion, on a financial, technical and scientific level

PROMOTE

The emerging talents will present their research and work widely, through a series of interconnected activities (talks, exhibitions, meetings, workshops, publishing...)

EXCHANGE

The program is designed to foster geographical and disciplinary exchanges. By travelling to the different institutions, not only will the residents discover new territories and networks, they will enrich their research with complementary approaches and benefit from different resources

disseminate

The residents will also actively engage with a widest audience (B2C), getting involved in making the learning, experimental and creation processes, as well as the challenges of our digital condition visible, tangible and debatable

A RE[A]SIDENCY PROCESS

Being an accelerating project of architects, artists and designers residency our main actions will consist into training and be providing technological resources for the candidates as much as a coaching and consulting service to guide them towards new business opportunities. All the trainee will encounter various activities we will collaboratively set with them such as pitch first review, mid-term and final reviews, workshops, conferences, exhibitions, filmed documentary and dissemination about their experience.

The constitution of the residency programme within a set of European partners is to allow to travel through the shared resources of the established network in order to efficiently achieve the goal of the participants. Once the selection is done, participants will state their initial needs and, along with the constitution of the support team of experts, places and resources will be assigned accordingly. In that fashion and also in order to efficiently distribute the time and efforts of all the actors in the project, the first phase can be divided into a maximum of 3 phases with a minimum of 1 month each. The final phase of four months should remain entirely in the same place, at the exception of the final presentation which could travel to any of the participating entities if specific conditions of presentation are required and not met otherwise. For such ambition to work efficiently, AREA Institute's partners for the first issue of this program with 2 others entities in Europe to provide a wider access to the European audience for the dissemination of creative knowledge, the reach, curation and promotion of emerging talents with creative entrepreneurial traits and the postindustrial means of production merging collective and industrial resources. All having prior experience in their respective formats of residencies and clear relation with art, technology and society while developing themselves a complementary network in Europe.

Within the complementary network of expertise and resources represented by the three main partners, residents will have the opportunity to benefit from academic, research and industrial dynamics within and between each institution and according to the orientation of their own projects.

Affinities and interests found in the research and development will be distributed as follows :

  • collaborative robotics and physiological computing applications to design architecture and art will benefit from resources and expertise provided in Paris by AREA Institute

  • design, fabrication and construction processes, hardware and software developments involving metal-based material constraints will be highly supported and hosted by Creative Robotics in Linz

  • and similar interests involving natural and bio-sourced materials will be hosted and benefit from the high-end expertise and focus of IAAC in Barcelona.

RESEARCH PROFILES

A call for participation will be announced and start in May 2018 and the selection of expertise and proficiency will be oriented according to the general fields of interests :

  • collaborative robotics,

  • physiological computing,

  • machine learning applied to design-fabrication-construction, metal-based design and fabrication processes,

  • bio-sourced design and fabrication processes,

  • applicative software and hardware,

  • simulation,

  • AR-VR

The aim is to offer straightforward support and resources to talented and ambitious students and young graduates at an early stage by quickly tailoring support to the person and offering exposure to emulate early works and prototypes.

Mainly aiming at advanced master students (with prior proven practical experience or in their final graduation year) and postmaster students, the selection process is composed in two stages.

First by applying with a personal letter of intent describing motivations, personal agenda and goals expected to achieve if selected for residency, a cv reflecting outstanding academic-personal-professional achievements and relevant precedent projects, and a curated portfolio of projects reflecting the intentional goal of the residency.

While applications will be distributed and collectively voted for second stage selection by all partners, successful selected applications will go through personal interviews and exchange directly with each entity to distinguish successful candidates capacity and motivations. Aside from expected outstanding applications, the clarity of a project agenda and its potential entrepreneurial developments, along with the maturity of the applicants will be decisive in the final selection process.
